Things That Mosquitoes Are Attracted To
Standing water
Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. These breeding grounds exist near ponds, marshes, containers, and any other area that holds water. This is especially dangerous during the rainy season. Since Northwest Arkansas gets a lot of rain, there are many potential areas for mosquitoes to breed.
It is always important to dump standing water at your home or nearby areas to avoid any risk.
Light
Like many insects, brightly lit areas around houses do attract mosquitos.
Warm humid weather
Warm weather with high humidity is prime time for mosquitos. Since we live in a humid climate, it is even more important to take preventive measures when it comes to mosquito prevention.
Dangers of mosquitos
Other than disturbing your peace, mosquitos are a nuisance. They carry a lot of health hazards and have different variants that can spread diseases. Mosquito bites can cause problems if scratched and infected, but even more worrisome are the diseases they can carry.
Diseases Associated With Mosquitoes
Diseases carried by mosquitoes vary around the world, with some of the most widely known diseases being these:
West Nile virus
West Nile virus results in fever alongside body aches, headache, pain in the joints, stiffness in the neck, rashes, and diarrhea. Although the infected person can recover through proper treatment, body weakness and fatigue lasts for weeks, and in even some cases for months.
Zika virus
Zika virus has similar symptoms to West Nile virus, but the symptoms can be mild compared to the West Nile virus. However, the Zika virus stays in the body for some time and it can be transmitted from a pregnant woman (affected by the virus) to the baby. This can result in damages to the neural stem cells of the newborn baby causing microcephaly.
Malaria
An infected mosquito can cause malaria. People with malaria get extremely sick including body aches, chills, very high-grade fever, abdominal pains, and flu. It is a serious disease, and patients can take a long time to recover from it.
Yellow fever
Yellow fever is a high-grade fever which in serious symptoms include jaundice, as well as nausea, vomiting, and body chills. Uninfected mosquitoes that bite a person infected with yellow fever can then transmit the disease.
Dengue fever
Dengue fever is transmitted from the Aedes mosquito. The recovery time usually takes 2-3 weeks with the infected person having symptoms similar to other mosquito diseases. However, it can be a fatal disease. Moreover, post-recovery, there are still signs of weaknesses.
