Flies are dirty! It’s as simple as that. You hate them because they land on your food and their presence irritates you. Flies will contaminate clean surfaces and spread germs and filth. Flies feed on everything. They’re carriers of many pathogens, which makes flies hazardous to your health. The common housefly can transmit the pathogens that cause shigellosis, typhoid fever, E. coli, and cholera.
The size of the flies allows them to easily enter your home or business. Flies can even enter homes on food products–these are mostly fruit flies.
How Are Flies Harmful?
Flies get around. It goes without saying that they can be feasting on roadkill in the morning and enjoying your bbq for dinner. Whatever they feast on, they will collect and spread pathogens and bacteria on the legs and mouths.
Flies are a direct source of food poisoning making them extremely harmful.
Flies can land onto anything – Trash/garbage at your home or business, your food, drainage areas, standing water, pet waste, and on dead species.
Types of Flies
There are roughly 18,000 types of fly species in the United States. Which means there are a LOT of pesty houseflies.
Filth Flies (House Flies, Drain Flies, etc.)
Filth flies cause the most harm to humans and animals. As mentioned above, these flies are sources of spreading disease-carrying bacteria and pathogens. They feast on garbage, animal manure, and lay their eggs. They contaminate foods and food preparation places by simply landing on them.
Small Flies (Gnats,etc.)
Small flies have generally been discovered feeding on wet organic matter. This includes soil areas that have contaminated sewage, water from drain pipes, decayed vegetables, fruits, and spilt garbage.
Fruit flies around your premises are trouble makers, especially in the summer season. They are mainly attracted to moist things and waste areas. These include fresh fruits and vegetables. Other things that fruit flies can be found on include garbage, waste disposal areas, drains, rags, and cleaning mops. Fruit flies feed on food surfaces.
Flies and Diseases
Flies spread diseases rapidly because they move quickly from one place to another.
Once the fly lands on food, utensils, or food surface its body releases pathogens e.g. Salmonella, E. coli, Shigella, Staphylococcus, etc. on them. This can lead to many serious illnesses. These illnesses include dysentery, typhoid, cholera, diarrhea, worms (e.g. tapeworm), food poisoning, infection in the bloodstream, meningitis, hepatitis, and typhoid.
